Hey hi! I’m Leonard, a year 3 civil engineering undergraduate from NUS.
Being able to communicate effectively is crucial for me primarily because of
the work I am considering after graduation, namely; structural engineer,
teacher or social worker. How I see myself now is perhaps one that has ideas on
how to do things, but never daring to share with others confidently because I may
be incoherent in presenting my views, and end up coming across as unrefined or
without conviction.
Within verbal communication, some subsets include knowing what
things to ask, clarifying what has been said, being sensitive to how a message
is delivered, and speaking about something that can be easily understood. These
are all very applicable skills that the work I am considering will require. An engineer
has to ask and clarify statements made by the contractor to ensure they
understand the structure on a same level, otherwise by allowing construction to
continue, the safety of the building may be compromised.
A social worker has to be mindful that many of their clients
are emotionally vulnerable, and what they say will have an impact on them. I
have to realize then that I am responsible to others through how I relate to
them, and at the same time be sensitive to the non-verbal cues these clients
may be communicating to me.
A teacher also requires good communication skills, conveying
information one has a good grasp of for people who will be learning it for the
first time. Some of the skills and knowledge I have learnt may come easy to me,
but others may need a longer time to understand. It is essential that I be aware
of this difference in learning pace, and how to present a concept that is
understood universally.
Hi Leonard!
ReplyDeleteFirstly, I LIKE the paragraph on social workers! :D Not many people think of/remember this profession.
Also, i believe that the hallmark of a good teacher is one that is able to explain a complex concept in the simplest way possible for understanding. I think that by having effective communication skills, this can be achieved as one will moderate the level of communication depending on the various ages of the listeners as well as the listener's command of the language as well (:

Hi Sarah!
DeleteI agree that a teacher is most effective when he/she can pitch an idea that is understood by all, regardless of how comfortable they are with language and communication.
Having worked with you for a few weeks, I do admire how you are able to present ideas in a clear and concise manner, and always are able to come up with examples to support your point.
In the context of a social worker, effective communication is all the more important, seeing that so much depends on the interaction and how both parties need to understand each other.
I hope to learn from your example on how to bring out a message/idea clearly without confusing the other party.
Hey Leonard,
ReplyDeleteits nice that you have an idea of what you want to be after you graduate, which path you want to take and the requirements of those paths relating to effective communication. All the best for your future !
I think that anyone reading this post will be able to understand how effective communication link to being an engineer, teacher and social worker.
In my opinion, i agree on the paragraph for social worker. I think the fact that there is a huge need for them to be able to communicate effective because the very basis of social work is informal interaction. Good interpersonal skills and being able to understand what your client is trying to convey to you is important as well. Misinterpretation of what the client want will be disastrous.

Hi Evelyn!
DeleteI'm actually still discerning all the time what I would like to do in future, but with that in mind, it also reminds me to not just limit myself as to what makes a good communicator based on the type of job I am in.
Yup, it will really turn out bad to misinterpret what the client is trying to convey. Maybe then, effective communication is also to understand what the other party is trying to tell us? Thanks for bringing up this consideration to me!
Brilliant point you have brought forward regarding the teachers' need to realize the difference in learning pace and ability to transfer information!
ReplyDeleteThis is my 4th year of my Bachelors education, and I do feel that a good student may be be necessarily be always a good teacher. Being a good teacher requires excellent communication skills to convey his/her message to a lecture of 100 or more students. Teachers need to adjust their plan according to how the students perceives their lectures.
Hi Tonmoy!
DeleteNow that you mention, I think I should be more understanding towards my professors when they either go too fast or slow during lectures. It's really how I perceive it, and everyone has their own view on the pace or structure of the lesson being given.
Thanks for highlighting this to me!
